The Skābeklis project was created to promote Latvians' feelings of unity and patriotism, and to try, through a combined effort, to make Latvia even greener. The project's ambitious objective was to seed and then replant as many trees as Latvia has people, in this way demonstrating what could be achieved if everyone in Latvia just planted one little tree seed.

To date, the project has seen more than 5 million pine and fir tree seeds distributed to the population. The hands-on involvement of schoolchildren, popular actors, symphony orchestra musicians, also teams of employees from numerous major companies has seen 2 177 063 pine and fir tree seeds being sown. The Skābeklis project will culminate in spring 2011, when all the seedlings will be replanted in forests.
